What are some of your Driving Pet Peeves?
What are your Driving Pet Peeves?
My pet peeve
I can't stand it when people don't indicate before turning into lanes, especially when they turn right in front of you.
Re: What are your Driving Pet Peeves?
Where to start..... ![]()
- fail to move right and/or stop for emergency vehicles
- fail to move LEFT for stopped police vehicles
- having the hwy closed (usually pylons, flares, cruiser x-ways, lights on, MTO arrow trucks) and someone stops and asks "Is the road closed" or "Is there an Accident"
Sure some of these will tweak others minds....
- improper turn (turning NOT into the closest lane)
- someone signals, then swerves the opposite way to make the turn to the way they signalled
- someone who flies past me, slows down, then I pass them, (repeat) all at the same time I have cruise locked.....so inconsistent rate of speed
- improper merging (not entering at hwy speed....can I say Toronto)
- big signs saying road merging 3km ahead, yet knuckleheads wait until there is no lane remaining and cut others off who merged over well ahead of time
Re: What are your Driving Pet Peeves?
People making a left/right turn from 2-nd left/right lane, especially right in front of you.

Can you say HWY10 in Caledon.....rass-in-frassin-no-good.
Slow people in the left lane, weavers and tailgaters. One of these days I'm gettin' a new car out of one of them and I won't even have to try.

Getting a ticket on a merge ramp to a highway for exceeding the 30kph to 70kph limit on those ramps. Where exactly do those limits end?
My favorite is I'm in a left turn lane at a light and the idiot in the lane to the right of me accelerates and makes the left turn in front of me.
OR
Same scenario but they make a u-turn instead.
- driving in the right lane and the car in front stops, puts hazzards on and proceeds to exit car like he/she belongs there.
Re: What are your Driving Pet Peeves?
How about the idiot that floors it,making a right hand turn
only to slow down to 10kmh as soon as he gets in front of you!

I think we should be allowed to hit the other car in this instance. ![]()
Plus he gets 2 minutes for being stupid.

Unless the signs are posted with a white background and black letters they are NOT enforceable. You are probably referring to yellow speed limit signs which are "cautionary" signs with recommend driving behaviour.

And the driving public thanks you for that one.

The best thing is to think of those "black on yellow" as actual limits for the buses and 18-wheelers, not as "limits" for cars. You have to realize that the OHTA refers to ALL vehicles travelling, and where a bus can make a curve at no more than 50 does not mean a car cannot do the same curve at 80.

Re: What are your Driving Pet Peeves?
Pet peeves? Well, since you asked, I have two. I'll vent them as separate threads, in case there's more interest in one than in the other.
First, people who try to drive and to use a cell phone at the same time. Hand held or hands free, makes no difference to the statistics. Either way, any driver (and we've all seen them) who is involved in a telephone conversation or text messaging while driving is dangerous. Some studies indicate the level of danger is about the same as that posed by a driver who is over .08 alcohol.
Have I done it? Yep, and I was a damn fool, too.
McGuinty's government should stop ducking this one and get legislation into place, now.
For a good, recent overview of various studies on this, see

Pet peeve #2: Cutters.
"Cutters" is the term used to describe those jerks who breeze by lines of vehicles waiting their turn to get through where the multi-lane traffic flow has been reduced to fewer lanes, or to a single lane: construction, built-up area, emergency, etc., etc.
A friend of mine says he actually met one of these people at a party once. The guy was quite open about it -- said, "Oh, yeah, there's always somebody near the head of the line who'll let you in."
Know what? He's absolutely right. That cutter and the others like him will always succeed in getting in near the head of the line, and the line will get longer, and slower, when, if everybody just merged a kilometer or more back, when the Merge signs started to show, nobody would have to stop at all.
In fact, I don't think you can stop them.
You can't head them off up the line because, for one thing, HTA OREG 455/07, 8, i, now defines as "Stunt Driving": "driving a motor vehicle in a manner that indicates an intention to prevent another vehicle from passing." So moving to the left somewhere back up the line to stop the bastard (or the bitch) from going by is a slam-dunk invitation to a multi-thousand-dollar session of vehicle impoundment and all the rest of the new "Stunt Driving" thing.
And you can't give them a hard time near the head of the line, either: 148(2) says you must let them complete their pass when they signal that it's you that they intend to cut in front of. For that matter, the same "Stunt Driving" definition mentioned above might apply here, too.
I really don't like cutters.
(Please excuse any errors I've made in the way I've cited the laws. I don't always know where to place the parentheses, periods, commas, etc.)

Never heard of the term "cutters", but good to know.
I do not think 148(2) applies at all.......most times these "cutters" are in fact stopped or slowed down now as it merges....trying to get into a lane that is moving.......so the vehicle is now NOT travelling at a greater speed and thus this section does not apply ![]()
Unless there is a collision, I personally would not even consider the HTA 172 for being a "blocker" to a cutter. Maybe fail to drive in a marked lane, but that's it.
I can't stand "cutters" either....funny I don't see much "cutting" when I work...hmmm
Re: What are your Driving Pet Peeves?
I cannot stand people who make a stop on the right lane (especially/mostly in downtown Toronto, where there are a lot of busy 2-lane streets), and get off the car to go somewhere, or just park there and wait to pick someone up or something, and in turn congest the whole street, as if it's his own driveway.
There must be some sort of regulations in HTA thats against this right?
Re: What are your Driving Pet Peeves?
First and foremost... I hate people failing to chage lanes when an emergency vehicle (such as a police cruiser) is on the shoulder of a highway. By far, one of the best new laws ever introduced in this province. As a matter of fact, when I get pulled over, I exit the highway first. The officer sometimes gets pissed, but when I explain that it was for his own safety (and mine), he appreciates it.
Biggest pet peeve, is left laners! I mean, if you intentionally drive in that lane excersing your right to drive at, or under the speed limit, then you are breaking the law .... that left lane is for passing! I would argue that it's a worse offence than speeding (at only 20k over) as you piss off the guy behind you, making him tailgate and become even more agressive. Yes, people are responsible for thier own actions, but any cop or driving insructor will tell you to get away from agressive drivers.
Pet peeve #2: Cutters.
I like Proper1's pet peeve. I drive a luxury car and will not let these jerks in, especially if there is space behind me. Most will not "force-it and will eventually back off, presumeably for fear of having to pay to repaint my my car.
Don't get me wrong, if I'm in the right lane, I move to the left and give people room to merge (unlike those idiots who blindly keep driving, blissfully unaware that cars are trying to merge on to the highway into thier lane).

How about OHTA 182(2) "Fail to obey signs - "no stopping" sign", with 2 demerit point "award"?

Oh yeah I totally hear that...
You know what I still don't understand are the people who STILL don't know that you HAVE to pull to the right and STOP when any fire truck or ambulance is approaching.
I have witnessed this act yesterday when a van just didn't understand that law. Everyone pulled over but this one van just didn't get the clue.
The fire truck had to slow down and finally the van driver just moved to the side at the very last moment.
I think that is one of the worst pet peeves for me.
Re: What are your Driving Pet Peeves?
Here's one other pet peeve of mine
People blasting music with base so loud that MY windshield vibrates to the beat... Cannot hear anyhting else, and most time those people have no taste in music, leaving others to suffer to their cacophony.

Re: What are your Driving Pet Peeves?
racer, I get the attention of that guy (with the loud music) to open his window. I then yell at him (using a friendly voice) ..." hey, can you hear the song on my radio?" ... he usually says "no", so then I yell at him, swearing and all angry like ... "then I don't want to hear your f&*#@ music"...
doesn't really do anything, but it's fun just the same.
Re: What are your Driving Pet Peeves?
synergy, I feel the same way, but I get especially angry when the other guy cannot even hear me yelling

Re: What are your Driving Pet Peeves?
people on cell phones. Period.
Also I hate "cutters" as well. I see it everyday. Doesn't have to be in a construction zone, it happens everywhere. Why do we make highways with lanes that end? Why do people use them when they know the lane will end, and why do people let them in? I always make sure a "cutter' ends up behind me. I'm always hoping it will "teach then a lesson". But it never does. If you know the lane is going to end, move over and keep the flow going.

What about texting?
I avoid all 400 series highways whenever possible!
Today on the 400 I saw one person texting, in the right lane, passing me on my motorcycle doing a steady 130km/h ![]()

Summons for HTA 82 (9)
Hi so I have a bizzare situation. Today I received a summons for "being the owner of a motor vehicle bearing Vehicle Identification Number ###, failed to submit the vehicle, equipment or drawn vehicle for inspection or tests as required by an officer" for a vehicle I previously owned. Apparently a violation of HTA 82(9).
The date of offense is June 15, the summons was issued on October 26th and I…
Too many points all of a sudden
I'm in a bit of a pickle and hope you generous folks don't mind shedding some light
on my situation.
I have an Ontario driver's license . I've recently received a rash of
tickets 4 of them over the last 12 months or so.
If my trials don't go well I could end up with a suspended license. My
trials are scheduled in a 3 months. I'm moving to PEI in about 2
weeks. As of right now my record shows 0…
Improper left turn
Hi, I need some help for the ticket of lmproper left turn.
When i drove my car from east to west, intending to make a left turn and stop in front of stop line. There was a car in front of me, which has turn on yellow light. The light was turning red and then I thought I cannot leave in the intersection and turned, an incoming car was runing the light and hit me. No one got hurt but both cars had…
Manual for Genesis VP Directional?
Have a ticket in which the radar used was a Genesis VP Directional. I had downloaded the manual for a Genesis VP but I now realize that the unit is not the same so it is the wrong manual. My trial is very soon so I do not have time to ask for disclosure of the manual.
Does anyone have access to an electronic version of the manual for Genesis VP Directional?
I want to see if it specifies a tuning…
Speeding ticket
Hey Guys, I need some help regarding an issue.
I was pulled over today in the city of Oakville for going 75 in a 40 zone. However, I am 100 percent certain that I was going only 50 in the 40 zone. When I was pulled over, I was driving my Dad's car which I felt was the reason I was getting stopped since two teenagers driving a 2013 S Class. He asked does I know why I am being pulled over and I…
Tickets and filing 11b
hello guys,
I really need help on fighting my 9 tickets i received from one police officer. Here is some background of what happened!
I was caught speeding 66km on a 40km (school zone) on January 29, 2010. I was driving my friend's car and turns out she didnt renew the validation on the vehicle and didnt leave the up to date insurance paper on the car.
After waiting almost 40 mins in my car i…
Accident reports with no damage/payout - insurance effect?
Hey question that I think here's probably the best place to get the answer:
I was charged with a careless driving offence in oct, trail in early april, so as of right now my insurance record is 100% clean... except the officer did file an accident report at the scene where I was classified at fault due to it being PI (although very minor). The person I hit did not sue etc, so the insurance company…
Failed to stop for school bus
Very much unintentionally passed a stopped bus, with sign and flashing lights. Didn't realize I had done it until I was at the end of the bus. I'll save you my sob story, but it was truly accidental. I'm generally very cautious and have a perfect driving record. Never been stopped.
While I realize if a cop had seen me that I would have gotten a ticket, there were none in sight. Though I may very…
Officer forgot to sign the ticket.
I was recently pulled over for running a red and I wasnt able to find my wallet in the car at the time to hand over my license. I had a passport in the vehicle that he used. The wallet was in the vehicle, it just fell through the seats. (Tough to find a black leather wallet in a black/black leather truck at night).
The officer still wrote the tickets for both he signed the one ticket (failure to…
110 in a 80km while passing?
I was passing a vehicle that was going slow for me and there was an oncoming vehicle coming at me. I speed up to get around the person I was passing and the oncoming vehicle turns out to be a cop who turns around and tickets me for going 110km in a 80km zone. How does it work with passing a vehicle? Once I passed the vehicle I went back down to my original speed of just under 100. The officer…
Antique Radar Detector...
I picked up a brand new (old stock) Fuzzbuster a while ago at auction (wopping $5!!) and I want to mount it on the dash of my old GTO as a cool accessory when I show it at car shows. But I'm not sure if it's legal or not.
Here's my thoughts:
- It is early 70's technology (x-band) so it won't detect modern police radar. That's assuming no police force uses the old x-band frequency.
- Though it is…

There were no deviced used to register speed.
It's claimed that I drove 140km/h in the area of 60km/h, which wasn't true. I was speeding, no not anywhere close to this speed (max 100km.h).

First ticket, reduced to 115 in 100 zone
Hi guys, I'm still a little in shock of getting my first traffic ticket...
On Monday afternoon, I was returning from Toronto to Ottawa on HW416, I was driving about 15 over 100 like always. Then a car came very close to me on the left lane and made me nervous, I speed up unintentionally to pass the car and change lane, but while doing that a police car pull out of the median. He was hiding in…
Transport Trucks limited to 105 km/h?
May i ask this question regarding transport trucks limited to 105 km/h. Moving road blocks or safety?
IMO it isnt speed that kills. I find transport trucks infact help keep the road going. With cars that choose to not move to the right and slow down the middle lane the trucks would try to pass in their passing lane therefore the slower traffic would move right.
Putting the trucks down more is just…
Notified of motion to adjourn
Hello,

This further delay is a big problem to my daughter's case. She is moving away to…
Failing to move to the right for emergency vehicle
Hi all,
This is what happened. I was travelling west on a four lane city street that was very light with traffic. I was making a left hand turn into a wide driveway of a business. There was traffic lights about 100 yards past the driveway and were red for the east-west traffic. I was in the left lane with my signal on and there was no oncoming traffic due to the red light. I was slowed right down…

He informed me that such a plate could be used to avoid red lights as well as 407 tolls, also that buying a new plate can help to lower the ticket if I fight the charge, and that he also took a picture…
Red light camera ticket. Moving for emergency vehicle
Hello,
I received a red light camera ticket. In the picture, you see an ambulance in front of me with flashing lights. I had moved to alleviate the traffic behind me for the emergency vehicles coming behind it.
Is this a possible defense, if so, does anyone know any good case law to justify this position?
Thank you

I was not charged on the scene for this but I'm scared i am going to be…
Failure to surrender insurance
I got a ticket for failure to surrender insurance because I did not have my new insurance stubs with me, just a bunch of expired ones. He said they don't have that ability, handed me the ticket and reminded me that my car could have been impounded.

I have no problem paying the fine and accepting…
