159km/h In 100 Zone

Unread post by tttre »

Got pinned doing 159 in a 100 zone. I have no speeding tickets, only a seatbelt ticket from a couple years ago.

This was in Hamilton, and I've contacted xcopper. They said they're pretty confident that they will have it lowered to a 49 over ticket. What is everyone experiences with this ticket, mainly in Hamilton but other places too?

In my experience a reduction to 49 over is pretty good, but that's still a pretty severe conviction. However, unless there are some problems with the prosecutor's case or some good triable issues, I dont think they are likely to reduce further.

Simon, severe in what sense? Insurance or license? Would insurance cancel the policy on a conviction like this? Do they actually look at the speed value on only that it's with the range of exceeding the limit 30 to 49? Thanks.

Mostly insurance. For a licence, it is four demerit points - significant but not severe.

Some insurance companies consider 50 over to be "major", some say 45 over, some say 30 over. Depends on the company. They all use different risk assessment tools to set their rates. Some of them will cancel a policy for a conviction for 49 over, but to my knowledge, it's not the majority of them.

I agree, insurance companies are all over the place. I don't think they look at the specific speed, but the range, as you suggested. Whatever range 49 over is in it is going to be pretty severe, but I don't know if they'd cancel on you for that. I do think though (just personally - I don't know if this is true) that 49 over is in a different category than 50+ over.

Seems to be that way.

Although, my insurance company considers 45 over or more to be "major." Not really tied to the HTA, but probably their risk assessment matrix.
