Congratulations on the way you handled it, nexxen90. Glad it's worked out as it should. It would be even nicer if the problem had never arisen at all, of course, but we do live in the real world, and stuff happens.
Just a thought... have you considered sending a follow-up letter to the same exalted personages, noting what has transpired, and confirming that the problem has gone away, leaving you able to carry on a normal life again (assuming, of course, that it has gone away for good)? Jeez, maybe they'll hire you to head up a civilian review board or something.

...they should have banned cellular phone use altogether. I agree with that statement. But the problem is technology has created small businesses that can easily operate out of a simple pickup truck. Many self employed individuals don't even have an office or a shop. Their tools are in the truck and the cell phone is the critical link to the client. I'm not saying it's a good thing. I'm just saying that's the way it is. If you think a guy is going to ignore his ringing phone (= money), you're just kidding yourself. The bluetooth earpiece works great if you have it all setup and tested for vol...

ice falling is treated much the same way as debris falling from the truck. Been lurking on this thread with interest -- like most drivers I too have been hit by stuff flying off trucks (including an aerodynamic 4'x4' piece of corrugated sheet metal two or three years ago), but figured it wasn't worth making a fuss because trucking companies are pretty much immune until somebody is injured or killed. As Off_camber says, "Trucking companies get this ALL the time." Ho hum, and what's for dinner? Ice, though, I have so far seen only flying, not hitting anything but the roadway. Is it al...

Re: Someone help please...suspended licence
OTTLegal, that sounds like it's already a done deal. Blackoffi is asking whether an appeal would be advisable, and whether there is some way to get a "special licence."blackoffi wrote:I was sentenced to pay a fine and learnt that my driving licence will be suspended for 6 months...Should my lawyer have requested it before sentencing?

Personally, I never slept better than a couple of times we took long bus trips to play tournaments (think New Orleans, at Mardi Gras) and I could get up into the open, un-compartmentalized overhead luggage rack. Remember those? Lovely motion, gently rocking. (Marred only, on the way to New Orleans, by the guy in the seat below softly and compulsively singing the then-new "Bye, bye Miss American Pie, drove my Chevvy to the levee..." at 3 a.m. He shut up only when I threatened to pour beer down on him.) I think there's probably a law against that now. There is against most things.

Your hunch may be right, Bear, but about the best I've been able to find so far is the Canadian Press story from 30 September. http://www.cp24.com/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20090930/090930_cellphoneban/20090930/?hub=CP24Home Details are hazy there, but CP seems to think that there will be fines "up to $500" and no points, which seems pretty light, to me. But then the story ends: "However, Ontario motorists using a banned cellphone could also be charged under careless driving laws and face fines, six demerit points, a driver's licence suspension and even jail time." Maybe hav...

New OHTA Section 78 "Distracted Driving"
Our friends in Queen's Park having passed Bill 118 2009 and its now having royal assent, the amended version of OHTA Section 78 is about to come into effect. The wording of Bill 118 is here: http://www.ontla.on.ca/web/bills/bills_detail.do?locale=en&BillID=2099&detailPage=bills_detail_the_bill I think the penalties will include 6 demerit points -- correct? Do we know yet how much they're going to ding us for fines? And they will ding us -- the sloppily-written bill prohibits, possibly by accident, all satellite car radios and virtually all standard car radios (since they have display s...

It probably means they're trying to fool us. Carswell is a Canadian publisher that specializes in legal materials. By saying one of their titles is "Published in Canada" they're likely tippy-toeing around making it too clear that it was printed in another country: i.e., they saved fifty cents a copy by seeing to it that no Canadian printer got the work. That's what I think when I see a statement like that on a publication -- but I may be biased because of my 30+ years in the printing business here.Squishy wrote:"Published in Canada by [Carswell?]..." What does that mean?
