Do I Need To Inform My Insurer About An Accident

My car skidded and it slammed into a tree on the median of the road. Thank God no other vehicles were involved and no one was hurt. I reported the accident to the police because the accident did involve municipal property (the tree) and the law requires that such accidents be reported to the police.
What I am uncertain about is whether I am legally required to inform my insurance company even if I do not intend to make a claim.

once the police complete a "traffic report", which is a simply a collision report...from there it goes to the MTO where the info is uploaded on the driving history of those on the report.
I do not know the legalities of initial notification, but upon renewal you would have to answer "yes" that you have been in a collision as the insurance company has access to the MTO driving record
