Hi there,

I received a speeding ticket in New York state on I-90 for 5 miles over speeding ticket. This for doing 70 miles in 65 miles zone. I am an Ontario resident.

I looked at the demerit point system and don't see any demerit point for 5 miles over(i.e 8 km over). The demerit points start from 16 km over.

So does this mean that if this NY ticket shows up on my records in Ontario, I will get no demerit points ? If I will, how many ?

Will this affect my insurance rates ?

Thanks

Ontario and New York have full reciprocity (supposedly) so any ticket from New York is supposed to show up on your Ontario driving record. There is some inconsistency in reporting, though. If it is done properly, it should show up as 0 demerit points.

Whether or not it affects your insurance will depend on your insurance provider. Most companies will raise your rates slightly, however, some will forgive one or two tickets for 1-15 km/h over the limit.
