Is it the real owner or the legal owner that is required to get insurance on the car? and which section of the HTA staes this please ? Thank you

It's actually the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA).

Whoever is the registered owner is required to have the insurance. If you have a leased vehicle, that means you have to get the insurance, if that's what you're asking.

Insurance is required.

Anyone can pay for it.

The main driver must be listed on the policy.

An occasional driver would be covered if over 25.

The act states the vehicle owner, not registered owner. It's right at the beginning under Section 2 of the CAIA. I'm sure it's worded this way to prevent a loophole for non registered vehicle owners.

Under your example, if the Crown entered the bill of sale as evidence and/or a statement from a previous owner regarding the sale, it would probably be sufficient to show ownership.

Yep, actually Stanton is correct - as usual. "Vehicle owner.". My bad. Either way, any automobile driven on public roads needs insurance, no matter who owns it.

Yes, but does the vehicle ITSELF actually need to be ensured? If my policy for my own vehicles covers me in those vehicle and ANY OTHER VEHICLES I CASUALLY DRIVE, then I'd say there's no problem if I'm driving my friend's car which he doesn't have insurance on because the vehicle is technically insured at the time I'm driving it under my policy.

Yes Simon.... and there is a question insofar as 'vehicle owner' also because how would one determine who the owner actually is if the car is not registered ? It would seem that only if car is registered the 'owner' can be identified as such. For example .. what if a group of people owned it jointly ? I know it sounds odd but it is possible isn't it !

If the vehicle is not registered and you don't have insurance... you could get nailed for driving an unregistered/unplated vehicle AND for driving without insurance.

The Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act says "any owner or lessee" must have insurance for any vehicle they own/lease (section 2). I think that means that the vehicle requires it... because the owner gets charged if the vehicle is driven without insurance in effect.
