Stolen Property
I wanna buy a second hand laptop from kijiji.
I'm concerned about stolen property or more clearly, getting done for receiving stolen property.
If I do buy something and it turns out to be stolen; I understand it's not mine and would need to be returned,
but would they charge me?
I know someone in the UK who did time for receiving (unknowingly).
If I print of the advert and meet the person at there house and have them sign a document.
Have I taken reasonable steps?
What about buying things from car boot sales/ flea markets? same thing....
cheers in advance

Re: Stolen Property
Not really HTA !
But you have to have knowledge that something is stolen to make out the mens rea element of the offence. Having said that, if something is too good to be reasonable then that can work against you. But yes, if you are found to have something stolen then you have to give it up and your only recourse is to sue the person who sold it to you.

Re: Stolen Property
Do some due diligence as well, you can check the online public portal of CPIC to check if an object has been reported stolen by it's serial number;
http://app.cpic-cipc.ca/English/searchformproperty.cfm
Just exercise caution when buying from less reputable sources, not just because the item may have a checkered past, but because its condition may not be as the seller describes it.
