Seize Your Car For 7 Days..watch Out Suspended Drivers.
Changes to the Ontario Road Safety Act that will allow police to impound vehicles for a longer list of offences will kick in Dec. 1.
The seven-day vehicle impoundment will now apply to motorists driving with a suspended licence, being over .08 alcohol level in the blood, refusing to provide a breath sample or not having a required ignition lock device.
It will include drivers whose licences have been suspended for not making family support payments.
The changes were included in amendments to the act in 2009.
Motorists in Ontario can already lose their vehicles and licences for seven days if they are charged under the province's stunt driving law.
This is gonna sure hurt I bet.

Finally, a law that makes some sense. Take away the car from those not allowed to drive..................yeah...........the law makers have at least one brain cell.

I'd just like to point out that this isn't really much of a change. Police have always had the authority under s. 217(4) of the HTA to seize and impound a vehicle indefinitely, until a judge orders it released or the proceedings related to it in court are complete, for any offence where an arrest is made in relation to the vehicle. That includes racing, stunt driving, and all of the new offences except driving without an ignition interlock when required to have one. All in all, not that big a change, it just looks different.

should add in an impoundment for insurance offences.
expired card = vehicle is impounded until proof is faxed to police from the insurance company
or have insurance directly linked to MTO for proof
then NO insurance and vehicle is impounded for 30days.

I think New Brunswick has a provision where uninsured vehicles are seized and impounded. To me, not being licenced and/or insured are two basic offences where the vehicle should be immediately removed from the road. At least suspended drivers will get nailed here.
For insurance, it's very simple: Vehicle impounded, and will only be released when insurance is obtained (unless it was stolen and the owner had no intent of driving it, e.g. vintage car that was in storage during the winter). That's how it should be.
