What can you say, our government is making easy money by targeting good drivers. Too bad that the we can't do anything about it. I'm actually sick and tired of all these new laws that really have nothing to do with safety.

Thats the sticky point, neither the government or insurance companies will actually test and see how good or bad our driving skills are. They don't want to know.

Regarding this 'law'. The reason they can impound a car is because the car becomes the property of the Ministry the minute you register it. Anything that is registered belongs to the Crown I believe. (REGIS meaning King/Crown)

That's not correct. Actually, it's the exact opposite: You're telling the government that YOU own the car. The Ministry does not own it, but even if you own something, the government can confiscate it if it is used for an unlawful purpose. I still don't agree with the s. 172 impoundment provision, but this is pretty much beating a dead horse...

Yes I suppose it is beating a dead horse in a way. But whilst you do in fact INFORM the Ministry that you have bought a car and have equitable ownership in it, you are now submitting the title to them (Ministry/Crown.) Because they HOLD title as it were they have the power to seize. I hate to disagree with you on a technicality but its the same with a house. You own equitable title and the Crown holds legal title hence how they can demand property taxes. The word REGISter itself pretty much spells out the meaning. Either way by registering anything it is now up for seizure.

Its not a form of enslavement or anything. If you want access to the road you need a Licence! If you want to drive a car around you gotta get plates! Not a huge conspiracy here, its not the federal reserve lol!

And yes there should be a registration system for all cars/automobiles that will be driven on Canadian roads, because this is called having Laws and Regulations. We don't have a HTA for no reason! The purpose is to create a law driven society so people can't just get behind a 2 tonne car and start driving everywhere like mad men!

People will die, accidents will be daily place, drunk drivers will reign free, and you are having a problem with registering your vehicle with the MTO? Really?

Benjamin Button, I understand what you wrote. It is just wrong. The government can, and will, seize unregistered vehicles as well as those that are registered. Same thing with firearms, etc.

The word register does not mean to give ownership to the Crown, either. Not in Canada, anyway.

Failing to register your vehicle won't stop the government from seizing it. In fact, if your vehicle isn't registered and you drive it on a public road, your vehicle WILL be seized.

I'm with radar on this issue. I don't think you can say that the government has any equitable or legal title to your vehicle or other personal property. They agents of the state (the police) seize it on behalf of the government under clear statutory or common law authority. That's how they're able to do it, not because they "own" it in any sense. If that was the case, as was mentioned, they wouldn't be able to seize unregistered vehicles.
